What should you do?
The Dos
- Be open and curious
- Practice active listening and be aware of your implicit biases
- Spend some time doing your own research, educating yourself and learn more about the history of the struggle in which you are participating in
- Be visible and use your privilege to amplify (in-person or online) the voice of underrepresented or marginalised groups e.g Open doors for individuals and mention them in spaces or meetings you attend .
- Learn how to listen and accept criticism with grace, even if it’s uncomfortable
The Don’ts
- Self-education is key. Do not expect to be taught or shown everything
- Do not participate for your ego or as a tick-box exercise “walk the walk not just talk the talk”.
- Do not compare your experience with others -it is not a competition
- Do not behave as though you know best or everything
- Please don’t speak for people’ but do your part to ensure that their voices are heard.
- Avoid assumptions :Do not assume that every member of a protected characteristic feels oppressed or is facing the same situation.
