What should you do?

The Dos

  • Be open and curious
  • Practice active listening and be aware of your implicit biases
  • Spend some time doing your own research, educating yourself and learn more about the history of the struggle in which you are participating in
  • Be visible and use your privilege to amplify (in-person or online) the voice of underrepresented or marginalised groups e.g Open doors for individuals and mention them in spaces or meetings you attend .
  • Learn how to listen and accept criticism with grace, even if it’s uncomfortable

The Don’ts

  • Self-education is key. Do not expect to be taught or shown everything
  • Do not participate for your ego or as a tick-box exercise  “walk the walk not just talk the talk”.
  • Do not compare your experience with others -it is not a competition
  • Do not behave as though you know  best or everything
  • Please don’t speak for people’ but do your part to ensure that their voices are heard.
  • Avoid assumptions :Do not assume that every member of a protected characteristic feels oppressed or is facing the same situation.
